How to register for a personal IRD account

Without an IRD number, you cannot work for many employers in New Zealand so, here is how to register for a personal IRD account.

What is an IRD account?

IRD means Inland Revenue Department and IRD number is your unique tax identification number. You and IRD track the tax you pay using this IRD number. Having an IRD number also helps make sure you pay the right amount of tax or get the right entitlements. If you have a business, you’ll need different IRD number for each of your businesses.

If you do not have an IRD number when you start earning income, you’ll pay a higher tax at the rate of 45%. The focus for this post is for individuals who will be working as employees.

When you need an IRD account?

You must have an IRD number if you will be:

  • earning money in New Zealand,
  • applying for student loan, child support, tax credit,
  • joining kiwi saver, or
  • filing tax returns

How do you get one?

You can get you personal IRD number by applying online or completing a paper application. You can apply for it from overseas, as new arrival to NZ or if you’re living in NZ but not a new arrival. If you are new to New Zealand and need an IRD number, here’s how you can get one.

Apply for IRD as a new arrival

If making paper application, visit a post office or go to Kiwi bank to pick up the IRD application form.

If making an online application, fill out the form online via the website. You will need your

  • Passport details
  • INZ application number
  • Your must recent overseas tax number, if you have one.
  • You may also need a New Zealand bank account (so a bank statement showing deposits or withdrawals or a signed and stamped letter that confirms your New Zealand bank account is fully functional).

You must apply for an IRD number on or before your final date by which you must arrive New Zealand (as shown on your visa). That way, IRD will use your identify information with Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

If approved, you’ll receive your IRD number by:

  • text or email in 2 working days
  • post within 12 working days.

They will contact you if we need more information to complete your registration. Once you get it, you can start using myIR to update your details and any changes.
