How to style faux locs + my video editing experience

Faux locs hairstyles

I just posted on a video on YouTube channel showing 30+ quick and easy faux locs hairstyles. This is a compilation of styles I created and those you’ll see on African girls or anyone who loves locs. Y’all, I found out “faux” is pronounced as “foe” right after I recorded the video. Why is the “x” even there? OMG!!!

Here’s the styling tutorial. 30+ hairstyles by your fav 30+ being!!

Recording this video was not as easy and quick as I had envisaged due to many reasons. I will talk on two.

Reason #1

My friends were coming into town for our ultimate summer trip. Read about how the trip went here (coming soon). So, I had to prepare for their arrival.

I should have filmed it way before that day but… PROCRASTINATION!

Reason #2

I don’t like my space enough to include it in public videos neither do I mind having my space in public.

Truly!! What do women want?!

On saying that, it took me a while to find THE right spot!! Then, I had to put on some make-up; hype myself up. You know, the usual. Took a ages.

But hey! Filming was successful.

Video Editing

It’s the video editing that did it in for me. I was so excited when I installed Adobe Premiere Pro. In my mind “Pro level”. It’s pro level alright but the bottlenecks to get there can frustrate any new bee. More so, one who is tight on time.

I missed my InShot! I wish they create a desktop version then it will be bye-bye to premiere pro.

The perks Premiere Pro offers offsets the issues. For one, it allows for customized/personalized effect. You have control over the look, transitions, sound effects in your video. It is a pro film making tool. New-to-the-business people like me usually don’t know the value until they do. Not to say that it is the only software application out there, but it is one of the top ones.

On second thought, InShot offers same. Their even comes pre-made thus saving time.

After watching the get started tutorials, I was ready and pumped to begin editing. My excitement was quickly cut short as I soon realized that I wouldn’t be meeting target completion date.

Editing was snail slow. The whole process was riddled with playback lag and frozen videos, constant closing and restarting premiere pro. I spent my whole morning scanning the internet for “how tos” that can help solve the problem. Approximately 7 hours yet the timeline was not even filled. I lost most of my useful hours to this problem.

What caused the playback lag in my adobe premiere pro? Below are the factors that contributed to the torture.

  1. My computer’s RAM was on the lower boundary for system requirement for the application. Mind you, I have a well sized RAM of 16GB.
  2. My graphics card, also very good, wasn’t on the list of recommended video cards for the application. Still worked in the end though.
  3. Adobe premiere pro uses SOOOOOOOOOOO much of CPU memory. It was running at 70 – 80% of CPU memory and battery. DAH!!
  4. High quality videos shot on my iPhone 13 pro.
  5. Lastly, the format of my videos. Since I shot using my iPhone 13 pro, the video format was .MOV hence, not recognized by the software application. I have seen videos were adding these types of clips was successful, even the software owners claim the application takes this file format. But, my case was different.

My video, which I schedule to go live on Monday, was pushed forward to Wednesday due to all the hassle. How did I rectify or manage these problem?

There was nothing much I could do for issue 1 and 2. Wasn’t ready to buy extra RAM surely wasn’t going to buy a new laptop either. When
I’m not Jeff Bezos.
After pouring in hours into searching for solutions, these are what worked for me.

  • Changed rendering in the project setting to software only instead of the default GPU.
  • Proxies! These are low-res videos of your original files. I created proxies and used those to do the magic. Even this process was war.

In the online video I watched, Premiere pro did the creation but when it came to my case, Creative cloud was like “Stand back, I’ll do the conversion”. Then went on to take forever and even then, had naming issues. Toor!!

  • I solved proxies creation problem by pulling the aged trick for technologies and that is SHUT DOWN. It worked because when I turned the system on later that day and attempted creating proxies, premiere pro did the job.
  • Cleared media cache. This was very handy during the exporting stage.
  • Cleared previews before exporting. It greatly reduced the export time of the final work.

The day this video was published, I finished editing and exporting around 4 am. This single act significantly reduced my sleep time from the already insufficient 6 hours to just 3 hours.

Content creators! How una dey do am?!
